THE announcement in the New Year's honours list that Mr. Song Ong Siang has been created a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, comes as most welcome news to the public of Malaya at large, and the Chinese community in particular. Mr. Song Ong Siang is the first Malayan Chinese, and outside the circle of Malay rulers, the second Asiatic in Malaya to receive the honour of knighthood.
We heartily congratulate Mr. Song Ong Siang on this signal honour which he has merited. Sir Ong Siang is a man of high intellectual culture, having had a distinguished career at Cambridge. His high character and public spirit, his intellectual attainments and sound judgment, have received their due reward in the recent anouncement. Sir Ong Siang who is a senior member of the Malayan Bar, has as a Legislative Councillor taken a keen interest in the public welfare, and has especially espoused th e cause of English Education in Malaya. We wish Sir Ong Siang many more years of prosperity in which be may enjoy the honour conferred on him for his public services in Malaya.
