A strategy for promoting media for indigenous peoples

E-mail Print
Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – The Third National Congress of Indigenous Communication, which seeks to structure a bill to recognize the right to information and communication of indigenous peoples, will be held June 29-30.

The event is open to journalists and indigenous communities, as well as those working with the indigenous world, e.g. legislators, civil society organizations, and other specialists.

The Third National Congress intends to define the national agenda for indigenous communities and design a work plan to improve conditions for the development of programs aimed at indigenous communities.
The Catholic Church is closely following these attempts for the incorporation of indigenous people into the country's political life. (See Fides 06/17/2010)

It will also seek to develop a strategy for dissemination and promotion of national and international instruments concerning indigenous peoples, and to delineate the mechanisms of defense against repression or attacks on the indigenous communities and their communications media. The event also aims to offer financing plans for the development of indigenous media and communication.

The Congress will be held at the San Lázaro Legislative Palace, seat of the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico in Mexico City.

In Mexico, this request for access to the media is no new arrival: in 2007 there was the First Congress of Indigenous Communication which later published a document with important applications. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 06/28/2010)
