Year For Priests

Love and support your priests

E-mail Print
Love and support your priestsPope Benedict XVI has declared 19 June 2009 to 19 June 2010 as the Year for Priests. The theme for the Year for Priests is “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests.” Its purpose is to encourage what the Pope calls “the yearning for spiritual perfection” in priests.

But the Year for Priests also gives lay people a special opportunity to learn more about the priesthood, to recognize and honour priests, to encourage priestly vocations.

Like our Holy Father, will you also give priests a special importance and say how much you love them, how much you want to help them to live their vocation and mission with joy and fervour?

Catechism of Priesthood

E-mail Print

Our Lord said to the priest; "Go, as My Father sent Me, I send you. All power has been given Me in Heaven and on earth. Go then, teach all nations .... He who listens to you, listens to Me; he who despises you despises Me. "

How great is a priest!

  • A priest holds the place of God and is invested with all the powers of God. A priest is everything after God.

  • A priest does not say, "God pardons you"; he says, "I absolve you".

  • A priest does not say, "This is the Body of Our Lord;" at the Consecration, he says, "This is My Body".
  • A priest gives us everything - all happiness, all graces, all heavenly gifts.
  • A priest places Our Lord in the tabernacle.
  • A priest receives the soul on its entrance into life.
  • A priest nourishes the soul and gives it strength to make its pilgrimage.
  • A priest prepares the soul by washing it in the blood of Jesus Christ, for the last time, to appear before God.
  • A priest raises the soul and restore it to calmness and peace during the point of death.
  • A priest touches the adorable Flesh of Jesus Christ with his fingers, plunges it into the chalice containing His Body and into the pyx where His Body has lain.
  • A priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; nor the Sacraments to himself. He is for you.
